2021/11/11According to Nigerian media reports, on August 25, the World Health Organization and UNICEF agencies in Nigeria congratulated Nigeria for its successful elimination of polio virus. Poliomyelitis is commonly known as polio.
Peter Hawkins, UNICEF representative in Nigeria, said: “This historic achievement not only marks the extinction of wild poliovirus across the African continent, but is also an important step in achieving global eradication of polio.”
Nigeria had more than half of the global polio cases in 2012, and in 2016 the country recorded the last polio case in Africa. At present, only Pakistan and Afghanistan are left in the world as polio-endemic countries.
